What is health insurance?
Health insurance is a type of insurance that helps you cover the costs associated with healthcare procedures. These include preventative, routine and emergency healthcare services. Personal health insurance policies also cover costs that are not covered by government provincial health insurance programs.
Health insurance protects you and your family from financial hardship in the case of medical issues or a medical emergency. That’s why it’s essential that you find the perfect, most affordable coverage for you.
Why should I get health insurance?
There are several reasons why you should get health insurance coverage. As previously mentioned, the costs associated with healthcare are often expensive and a health insurance policy can help you cover those costs. Without a health insurance policy in place, the costs can accumulate quickly if you constantly pay for healthcare services out-of-pocket. Having health insurance provides you with peace of mind, as your policy will often cover all or most of the costs, leaving you more financially secure.
You may also consider getting health insurance if your employer does not provide it, if your company’s group plan is nearing its expiry, or if you require benefits that are not covered by your company’s package.
What are the different types of health insurance exist?
There are four main types of health insurance:
Provides coverage for health expenses that are not covered by government-issued insurance programs.
It provides protection for your income when a long-term disability prevents you from working.
It provides coverage for the costs associated with illnesses that significantly impact your quality of life.
Provides coverage for the assistance required when chronic illness limits or reduces your physical or cognitive capabilities.
How much private health insurance cost?
The cost of a health insurance policy varies based on your age and location. While most insurers make their products available to all, the costs and rates involved can differ from one location to the next. The type of plan you purchase also impacts the cost, as does the number of people you have on your policy and whether you smoke.
What does health insurance cover?
Most health insurance plans typically cover the following:
- Prescription drugs
- Emergency medical services required while travelling abroad
- Specialized healthcare procedures (i.e., massage therapy, physiotherapy, etc.)
- Medical equipment (i.e., mobility devices, CPAP machines, etc.)
Where can I get affordable health insurance?
Most employers offer health insurance as part of their employee benefits package. This is often a government-mandated requirement, but it sometimes depends upon where you live. If your employer does not offer health insurance, you can also purchase a policy directly from an insurer.
Here at HealthRates.ca, you can compare insurance rates for different policies and providers to get the most affordable and perfect plan for you and your family before making a final decision.

Maintaining a healthy lifestyle isn’t just about following the latest dieting trends and spending hours at the gym. There’s much more to it. It’s often said that a machine is only as good as its parts, and the onus is on you to ensure those parts are in optimal condition.
One of the most important parts of our bodies is our teeth. Good dental habits, such as regular brushing, flossing and visits to the dentist’s office are beneficial to your dental health. When issues with your teeth occur, they can be corrected by a myriad of dental procedures, such as crowns, bridges and fillings. But these procedures always come at a cost.
Fortunately, there is a solution. A dental insurance policy can help to cover the costs associated with sustaining good dental health. We have prepared answers to some common questions about dental insurance to help you make better decisions about dental coverage.

What is dental insurance?
Dental insurance is a type of insurance policy that covers dental care, dentist visits and associated procedures. It is often much easier to navigate and understand than traditional medical insurance because it only deals with one aspect of your body.
Dental insurance is often included in benefits packages provided by employers or can be purchased separately if your employer does not offer dental coverage. It’s important to note that not all dental insurance policies cover orthodontic work, so bear that in mind when choosing a policy.
Why should I get dental insurance?
The short answer is that dental procedures are often expensive, especially if your teeth require extensive treatment. A dental plan can cover most of the costs associated with oral health. The longer answer is that the policies cover preventive, acute and emergency dental care, and your teeth serve as a good indicator of other aspects of your physical health. Proper maintenance of your teeth could help you put the bite on several illnesses, and with a policy in place, you will be able to save money or even completely cover any treatment you may require.
How much does dental insurance cost in canada?
The costs often vary from one dental plan to the next, but nearly always involve the following elements:
- Dental insurance premiums – Like all other insurance products, you must pay a monthly premium for the coverage you receive.
- Deductibles – Depending on the type of plan you have and your provider, you may be required to pay a deductible. The deductible is a payment that must be made before your insurer starts paying for the dental services your plan covers.
- Co-payments – Once you meet the requirements of the deductible, if your plan has them, you must cover part of your dental bills as a co-payment. A co-payment sometimes referred to as a co-pay, is a predetermined amount that you pay prior to receiving medical services or prescription drugs. Co-pays effectively act as a form of co-insurance, which is a percentage of the cost you pay for medical services after satisfying the requirements of your deductible. If your coverage does not feature deductibles, co-insurance will immediately take effect.
What does dental insurance cover?
Most dental plans provide coverage for the following procedures. Please note that the percentages listed below are national averages and may vary based on your plan or provider.
- Preventive dental care – This includes regular dental exams, teeth cleaning and x-rays. In most cases, your policy will cover 80% of the cost and you will pay the remaining 20%.
- Basic dental procedures – This includes fillings, periodontal procedures and tooth extraction. In most cases, this is also an 80/20 split.
- Major dental procedures – This includes root canals, crowns, bridges, dental implants and dentures. In most cases, the coverage is a 50/50 split, meaning you pay for half the cost and the policy covers the other half.
What is not covered by my dental plan?
While dental insurance does cover quite a bit, it does not cover cosmetic dental procedures. This includes veneers, teeth whitening, gum contouring, tooth shaping and bonding. The reason why cosmetic dentistry is not covered is that these procedures are more focused on enhancing the appearance of your teeth rather than improving your oral health.
Where can I get dental insurance?
As previously mentioned, dental insurance is available from most major insurance providers. Many employers also include dental coverage as part of their employee benefits packages. If you require orthodontic procedures, check to ensure it is included in the policy before you purchase it.
